I have fond memories of Sleepy walking the halls of Coolidge. He was a great conversationalist and fun to be around. He had a wonderful connection with young people. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. His memory will live in my heart forever!

I knew Sleepy as one of the most celebrated Takoma Playground athletes and then as an upperclassman baseball star at Coolidge. Two years older than I, Sleepy was gentle and generous with us younger baseball players, who played in his shadow. And what a long shadow this brilliant young man cast! I can still see, in my imagination, the mightiness of his batswing--the irresistable power--and yet the coolness of it all! At Coolidge, I once saw Sleepy hit a ball all the way over the centerfield fence from homeplate--the longest hit I ever witnessed on that field: 400 feet at least. But aside from being a brilliant hitter and pitcher, even in those days "Sleep" was a leader who taught all of us what it meant to show good humor and grace under pressure, and to be confident without bragging: he let his bat do all the talking!Sleepy, man, I admired you with all my heart. Many of us did, and we honor your memory. We will miss you forever.
